MWO conducted a survey of 100 local Muslim women and the results showed that one out of every 8 were raped, one out of every 6 were sexually harassed by Muslim men, and one out of 25 said the harassment took place at a masjid. We are partnering with HEART to train adults/parents, imams, and local leaders so that when women come to them with complaints they will be equipped to help and refer them to resources. 

Local Imams, leaders, and adults/parents are invited to participate in an interactive and intensive training on the principles developed by HEART to create survivor-centric spaces which support survivors of sexual violence with disclosing and accessing resources (RAHMA Principles).  This will be followed up, at a later date, by a second training about implementing policies, procedures, and processes to prevent sexual violence (AMANAH Principles).

Part one of the training will include the following extensive exploration of sexual violence (3 hours): 

1. Introduction to HEART and evidence-based approaches to sexual violence prevention.

2. What is sexual violence? Definitions, prevalence, impacts, intersection of race, and research from within the Muslim community. 

3. Current landscape of sexual violence - case studies. 

4. What’s missing from community and individual responses? A critical analysis of current efforts. 

Part two of the training will focus on the RAHMA Principles (2 hours): 

1. Understand the roles that rape culture and victim-blaming plays in sexual violence, and the barriers to victims disclosing, within Muslim communities. 

2. How to empathetically and appropriately respond with the RAHMA Principles to survivors of sexual violence who disclose their experiences. 

3. Local and virtual resources and supports for survivors of sexual violence.
